Trade Relations Concept on Clipboard. 3D.

At the time of brainstorming my idea for this post, I still had no idea where to begin. Really, I was trying to find a nice, positive angle to begin with. My motivation for writing this particular post was to invite you to come and trade with us in Maui. I am also encouraging my fellow islanders and citizens to self-start their own businesses in a positive manner. At the same time, I have not stopped working for myself. I am taking my brother’s advice and making more time for myself to seek out new business opportunities. Speaking from Hawaii, his advice to me at the time was to look for local opportunities. So, apart from welcoming you to our ohana (family), this is what I am doing. Looking for new work.

Once more, let me extend a warm welcome to all of you, wherever you are in the world today. Welcome to Maui. Hope you will be enjoying a long and profitable association with us. Isn’t it nice to know that there are very few places in the world that can be considered back and beyond? In other words; in the middle of nowhere. Maui is not such a place. It might be a small island but there are business opportunities galore for both locals and foreigners.

  • VISIT THE ISLAND’S BUSINESS CHAMBERS OR ORGANISATIONS – You no longer need to jump on a boat like our ancestors and the early settlers did. You don’t even have to jump on an airplane to talk shop with potential trading partners in Maui. All you need to do is connect with any one of the few business chambers or organizations that can pave the way for you to open a business network.
  • MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE TRADE RULES – This does not apply only to Maui. It applies to any province, state, county, town or region in the world. There are distinct differences among the lot of them. This is why the rules are in place. It responds to the local conditions and ensures that trade is fair and legal. International startups and investors have to be particular mindful of the trade regulations so that it also benefits local communities and that the startups and investors’ money is invested wisely and securely.
  • NETWORKING – Be prepared to cross divides consistently and reach out to always build bridges. By doing this, you become a positive developer, encouraging opportunities that will be mutually beneficial. Can you align your own personal interests and/or skills with niche areas or potentially profitable new startups? Well, of course you can. But you’ll never know until such time you start to talk to as many people as possible. If I can overcome my shyness, you can too. If you’re already an outgoing girl, well, good for you, but be prepared to be a good listener. If your potential partner or client wishes to speak her mind, let her. You will have your opportunity to respond by which time you will have formulated a sensible response that matters.

Work proactively with our guys over here. Ask as many questions as you can think of. Let them assist you wherever they can and whenever it is offered. Take the advice that is offered. Do not worry about talking to third parties or neutrals. This is business, it is nothing personal. Checks and balances need to be checked in any case. Our guys will be checking your credentials too. And when they do ask their questions, don’t be shy.

It is best to be open and honest and upfront about your intentions and background. Start lying to potential partners now and you begin to transgress our good ethical and friendly reputation and willingness to welcome you as a member of our family and not just another business dude. Doing our very best, we’ll be attentive to your needs. Please be respectful of ours too. Be culturally sensitive and you provide yourself with a great opportunity to understand your markets well.

Whew! It’s really hot out here today. That’s the tropics for you. Time to grab a fruit juice. Time to take a break. That’s important for business too.
